I’m a little confused about 洪洞县. It seems to be romanised as “Hongtong” in most places, but neither of my dictionaries includes “tong” as an alternate pronunciation of æ´ž. Is this a local variation, but otherwise correct Putonghua? Well, this map at least backs me up, although you’ll have to squint, thanks to the poor choice of colour for Hongdong County. But this page of the exact same university website goes for “Hongtong” (scroll down to the bit about the Great Scholar Tree). The Great Scholar Tree is definitely located in 洪洞县, so it’s not me getting confused between two different counties with similar names.

My character dictionary has 洞 dòng and 洞 tóng. The entry for the latter says
I assume that this is the place you’ve been doing research on.
That’s the one. Dammit, I’ve been writing it wrong all along. What character dictionary do you use? Mine didn’t have that entry for ‘tong’.
My character dictionary is æ–°ç¼–å—å…¸. Dual-colour version; red plastic cover; slightly bilingual.

But I guess I should do something about the colours and fonts on this blog, I had to copy those characters into the comment field to see them. Although everything shows up better on the laptop, so it may be just this screen. I don’t know.
The grey-on-grey in my comments is legible, but I feel the contrast could be better. Silver might be easier to read. Also, the font size is a little on the small side. Main text looks to be 10pt, comments 6pt. Chinese characters become difficult to read at small sizes. I’d have difficulty working out the second character of the name of the dictionary without copying it to Word and enlarging it.
The alternative is to hit ctrl and spin the mouse wheel to increase the size of the text on screen. I think the function is the same in Firefox and IE. Ctrl+0 restores things to their normal size.
Thing is it’s a little less legible on the desktop screen than on the laptop. That’s how I wound up going with this particular set up- it looked fine at the time. I guess I’ll have to play around with the settings and see what I can do.
