So now New Zealand jumps on the blame China bandwagon. But my first quibble with this story is: What the hell is anybody doing importing woollen clothing to New Zealand?!?!?!?!?
Now, I don’t want to deny the real safety issues here, but there is something seriously wrong with the press coverage of this ongoing saga. Take this sentence as an example:
She said the pyjamas were two-piece sets labelled “Made in China” and “Low Fire Danger”.
How, pray tell, is the “Made in China” label relevant to the alleged fire danger of these pyjamas? Yes, dangerous, defective and fake products are made in China, but they certainly do not make up the majority of China’s products, and the people importing these products share at least equal portions of blame with the manufacturers for not doing their homework. And besides, all countries are guilty of producing dodgy products. Remember those E. coli outbreaks in America only last year? Caused by China? No. Caused by American industrial agriculture. And while we’re on the subject of food poisoning, let’s take a quick look at New Zealand: All of a sudden New Zealand looks just as guilty of poisoning New Zealanders as China does. And yet the way the Western press has been carrying on of late, you’d think that China is the source of all evil.
All I’m asking for here is a little reason. Seems the “news” media has forgotten what that word means. Should China be called on its dodgy exports? Absolutely. Should the rest of the world face the same scrutiny? Absolutely. I’m sick of the hypocrisy that drips from these Western media reports. This, though, is a refreshing bit of honesty and reason. Honesty and reason, two things the mainstream media has forgotten.
