today’s anniversary

Thanks to a student for reminding me yesterday: Today is the anniversary of the Xi’an Incident, in which Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng arrested Chiang Kai-Shek and forced him to make peace with the Communists and unite with them against the Japanese. That wikipedia article is fascinating reading. Unfortunately, the characters on that Chinese site are too small for me to read comfortably, so that will have to wait until I have enough time this afternoon.
